Carta Investors

Query fund performance, NAV, partner data, and portfolio financials; build Excel budgets and financial statements; and generate tearsheets

The Carta Investors plugin gives LLMs access to your fund's data and allows you to generate tear sheets, budgets, and financial statements. Access NAV, fund performance, partner data, journal entries, portfolio company financials, build Excel budgets and consolidating P&L / balance sheets, and generate professional PDFs for investor reporting — all with natural language.

How It Works

Beyond the core skills, Claude can query all your fund and company data. See the data dictionary for the complete list of tables and fields available.

The plugin gives Claude access to:

  1. Fund metrics — NAV, TVPI, DPI, IRR, and performance data
  2. Partner data — Contributions, distributions, capital accounts, and investor information
  3. Portfolio financials — Company-level revenue, EBITDA, valuations, and multiples
  4. Tearsheet generation — Automatic PDF creation for portfolio company profiles
  5. Regulatory data — Form ADV Part 1A / Schedule D, AUM rollups, and audit support
  6. Budgeting & financial statements — Excel budgets, budget-vs-actuals pacing, what-if scenarios, and consolidating P&L / balance sheets across entities

All data queries are read-only — Claude can query and analyze your data but cannot create, modify, or delete records. The budgeting and financial-statement skills produce Excel workbooks locally (or in the open Claude for Excel workbook); they do not write back to Carta.

Available Skills

The plugin includes the following skills that Claude uses to answer your questions:

Reporting & data

SkillWhat It Does
explore-dataQuery and explore unlimited fund admin data via custom SQL. Claude can browse all available tables, write SELECT queries, and build reports—NAV, partners, investments, journal entries, portfolio financials, and more. Perfect for custom analysis, KPI tracking, and ad-hoc questions.
form-advFetch Form ADV Part 1A filing data and generate an interactive HTML filing guide plus an Excel filing reference (Items 5.D/F/H, Schedule D §7.B.(1), beneficial owners, asset composition, capital activity).
performance-benchmarksCompare fund performance against peer benchmark cohorts. Shows TVPI, IRR, DPI and percentile rankings vs. comparable funds.
download-tearsheetDownload tear sheets for one or more portfolio companies and funds. Single PDF preview or bulk ZIP download.

Budgeting & financial statements (Excel)

These skills produce accountant-ready Excel workbooks. In Claude for Excel the output lands in the open workbook; in Claude Code it lands in a local .xlsx file.

SkillWhat It Does
create-budgetBuild a new fund or ManCo budget workbook from Carta prior-year actuals (from prior actuals, a template, a recommendation, or sliced by tag).
fetch-budgetPull a ManCo budget already stored in Carta and write it to an Excel workbook with monthly amounts and subtotals.
budget-actualsRefresh actuals on an existing budget workbook — interleave Budget/Actual/Variance, separate Actuals tab, refresh in place, or extend by a period.
budget-vs-actualsCompare YTD actuals against a budget and analyze pacing — % consumed, run-rate projection, and off-plan flags. Supports chat-only output.
budget-scenariosModel what-if scenarios on an existing budget — trim (headcount, revenue shocks, cost rebalance) and growth (new raises, expansion hires).
consolidating-pnlGenerate a firm-wide consolidating P&L across all entities for a month — detailed tab plus a one-page executive Summary P&L; optional tag-view by department/cost center/project.
consolidating-balance-sheetGenerate a consolidating Balance Sheet across all entities for a month — side-by-side layout with Assets / Liabilities / Equity sections.

Form ADV

Fetches Form ADV Schedule D regulatory data and a firm-level rollup for annual filing prep. Works for any firm with Carta fund admin data.

How to Trigger

Ask Claude anything like:

  • "Pull our Form ADV data for 2025"
  • "What's our regulatory AUM as of December 2024?"
  • "Show me Schedule D data for last year's filing"
  • "What do I need for Form PF Section 1?"
  • "What's our total AUM across all funds?"

What You Need to Provide

Just one thing: a reporting date (e.g. 2025-12-31). The skill will ask if you don't include it.

What It Returns

  • Point-in-time only — no historical comparison across periods
  • Covers Fund and SPV entities only (excludes GP/management company entities)

Authentication

On first use, Claude will open a browser window asking you to log in with your Carta credentials. This is a one-time OAuth authorization:

  1. You log in with your Carta username and password
  2. Carta issues a secure access token
  3. Claude uses that token for all subsequent queries
  4. Your credentials are not stored by Claude — only the access token is used

If you log out or the token expires, Claude will prompt you to re-authenticate.

Permissions & Data Access

Claude can access fund admin data that your Carta user account has permission to view. This typically includes:

  • Your firm's funds and entities
  • Fund financial records and NAV
  • Partner and investor data for your funds
  • Portfolio company information
  • Journal entries and accounting records

Data is scoped to your firm — you cannot access other firms' data.

If you can't access a fund or data, contact your Carta admin to request access.

Limitations & Considerations

  • Read-only access — Claude cannot create, modify, or delete records or tables
  • Data freshness — Investors data is as current as your Carta records; data is typically refreshed daily or in real-time
  • Query performance — Large queries (e.g., 10 years of daily data for 100+ companies) may take longer
  • Bulk tearsheets — PDF generation for 50+ companies may take several minutes; you'll get a status link to check progress
